Blogs 101

Blogs are a phenomenal way for your child to enhance their writing and technological skills! When your student is writing to a larger audience on the web, he or she will be more likely to be concerned with how their writing looks and sounds to the reader.

Here is a video that provides a quick overview of what blogging actually is.

The video below is what I will show my younger students before we begin blogging.

According to (Why Teachers And Students Should Blog: 18 Benefits of Educational Blogging, 2018), when a student is able to blog, he or she is able to take ownership of their own content, develop new literacies, explore their creative side, boost confidence, make reflections, work on digital literacy and digital citizenship, have a voice, and make global connections. In addition, with blogging, students are provided with the practice of creating respectable and relevant content. Maloy et al. (2016) state that blogging can help to build a positive community in the classroom and also result in well-thought-out answers and responses. Blogging has also been known to improve brain performance (Thomson, 2018). Students' thinking is developed rapidly due to the daily writing that a blog requires (Thomson, 2018). Furthermore, since blogging is a type of writing, communication skills receive a boost!

As you can see, the benefits of blogging are far-reaching. Writing is a tough subject to teach. If blogging will help teach writing skills and the students enjoy it, it is a win-win situation.
